MyLA311- Resources *

To get the best results from the new MyLA-311 application, it's important to know how to leverage its improved features, such as more accurate mapping, request tracking, and photo submissions.

Submission best practices

  • Provide specific details. When filling out a service request, be absolutely sure to include a detailed description of the problem. This descriptive narrative of the problem helps city crews to understand the issue and location more easily .

  • Utilize location services. Turn on your phone's location services ONLY if you are currently at the location of the request for service, otherwise the app may have difficulty automating the location for the service. If you are not at the location, it is best to manually select the location and spell out the physical address. The Cross street, and North and South indications are great to add to your narrative.  When you are at the physical location of the request for service, the app can automatically tag your exact location. This is especially helpful for reporting issues like potholes, or graffiti in areas without a specific street address.

  • Use the map feature for accuracy. If you aren't at the location of the issue, use the in-app map to manually pinpoint the exact spot. This ensures the request goes to the correct work crew.

  • Add photos. It is essential that you include a photo of the issue, such as a pothole, illegal dumping, or graffiti. It provides visual context and often speeds up the resolution process.

    • Tip for iOS and Android users: If your phone's camera takes very high-resolution photos that exceed the app's 10 MB limit, you may need to resize or compress the image before uploading.

  • Check for existing requests. Before creating a new request, use the map feature to see if a nearby service request has already been reported for the same issue. This avoids duplicate reports and helps city staff manage requests more efficiently. Although the city will more than likely close your service request if it finds the same or similar request for service to the same location.

  • Submit anonymously if desired. You can submit service requests without creating an account or providing your personal information. Just toggle the "Report Anonymously" option. It is advisable if you wish to receive updates on your service request that you login to your account or set up a new one so you can track the progress easily and receive email updates on the status from 311.

Communication best practices

  • Track your requests. For more detailed updates, register for an account. Once logged in, you can "Follow" or "Subscribe" to your request and get text or email notifications on its progress.

  • Be patient with response times. While some issues like graffiti are often resolved quickly, others like streetlight, or sidewalk repair can take longer. Response times can also be impacted by staff availability, especially on weekends and holidays.

  • Know when to call 311 instead. For complex issues or to speak with a live person, call 311 during business hours. For 24/7 service, the app or website is your best option.

  • Be aware of jurisdiction. The LA311 app is for issues within the City of Los Angeles. For problems on state, or county property, the app cannot be used to file a request.

Expanding your usage of the app

  • Explore new services. The new MyLA311 system includes many new and consolidated service requests, from pothole repair and bulky item pickup to reporting animal services, or storm-related issues.

  • Use the self-service knowledge base. If you have a question rather than a service request, use the app's enhanced "Knowledge Base" to find answers and information on your own.

  • Pay bills and find resources. Beyond service requests, the app offers other features like paying LA DWP bills and locating city facilities.

  • Provide feedback. Look for opportunities to take an online survey after a request is completed. Your feedback helps the city measure satisfaction and improve its services.
