3rd St. & La Cienega Blvd. sewer project to start this week*

October 21, 2010

The Public Works Department Bureau of Sanitation year-long sewer rehabilitation project around the 3rd Street and La Cienega Blvd. area, previously scheduled to start in September, is now scheduled to start in the second half of October.  The project is located in the area bounded by Santa Monica Blvd. to the north, Wilshire Blvd. to the south, Fairfax Ave. to the east, and Doheny Dr. to the west.  (A map is available below.)  The first street that will be worked on is Swall Drive.

As each section of work starts, it is scheduled to take place between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and continue for 5 to 10 business days, which will cause serious impacts on traffic in the area.  Watch for further details or visit LAsewers.org.

Project  details:
  • About 2.9 miles of sewer pipes will be rehabilitated or removed and replaced.
  • Construction period: Late spring 2010 to summer 2011. Weather or other circumstances could shift the work schedule. Neighbors will be informed as conditions warrant.
  • Construction will generally take place Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and on major streets from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. to minimize traffic impacts.
  • Construction Cost: $1.46 million
  • Construction methods will include sewer pipe lining (rehabilitates defective sewers without excavation and surface disruption), and sewer pipe removal and replacement (performed by “open cut” or trenching, a method that is typically used where sewers are shallow).
  • In order to minimize disruption on your street, most of the construction work at most locations will be completed in about 5-10 business days.
  • Trucks and other equipment such as pipes will be used during construction, and you may see open trench excavation and debris removal.
  • Dust control will be provided in all project areas.
  • Enclosures or other barriers will be used in construction areas wherever necessary for public safety.
  • Flaggers will be used where traffic is impacted.
  • Trash pickup, deliveries, access to businesses and residential driveways will be maintained.
  • Parking may be temporarily restricted in some areas, and signs will be posted in advance telling you where and when.
  • People in the area will be notified 24-48 hours in advance whenever sewer services may be temporarily interrupted.
